The Community Spirit of Penticton
On Saturday May 30th, a Benefit Concert was held at the Elks Club of Penticton by a band known as the Wrinkles. The concert was held to benefit the Penticton Hospice Society
The Wrinkles Band was formed by a number of music loving members of the Penticton Newcomers Club. The Penticton newcomers Club is a social club made up of a diverse group of people from the Penticton, Naramata, Summerland, Kaledin and OK Falls area who have recently moved here or have experienced a significant life change such as retirement or loss of a partner. The PNC helps to establish connections by providing opportunities through a readymade social network and a roster of activities while experiencing what the Okanagan has to offer.
Two of the original members of the Wrinkles spent their final days in the expert and respectful care of the Hospice. Some members of the band got to witness the caring environment of the Hospice whilst visiting their friends. From this, the idea was born to hold a fundraising event to benefit the hospice. To this end, the band approached Deborah Sais, Executive Director of the Elks Club who agreed to allow the use their hall free of charge to hold the event.
Posters were printed to advertise the concert, admission was by donation only. Organizing, advertising and set-up of the hall was all done by the members of the Wrinkles, their families and friends – all volunteers. The actual concert was a tremendous success. Many members of the PNC showed up to support the band as did a significant number of people from the community at large. The hall was packed to capacity, everyone had a great time, lots of dancing and singing along.
The money raised - $2400 – was way beyond our expectations.
In conclusion, the entire event was community driven – The Wrinkles, The Elks, The PNC and the generosity of the people of Penticton. Our thanks to them all.
